Distinguishing Characteristics:

Leaves: alternate, simple, deciduous; two-ranked, ovate, less than 5.1 cm long; asymmetrical base; 3 primary veins and numerous cross veins (hence reticulate); often rough above

Flowers: small, greenish

Fruit: orange drupe, 6 mm diameter; dry, sweet outer coat; hard seed

Bark: smooth and gray when young; becoming rough with large corky warts on larger trees

Range: Southwest

Importance: fuel, posts, wildlife food
