Distinguishing Characteristics:

Leaves: alternate, deciduous, pinnately compound; 9-13 leaflets, less than 36 cm long; leaflet ovate, asymmetrical, yellow-green, strong walnut odor

Flowers: male in long catkin

Fruit: globose nut less than 3.8 cm diameter; husk hairy, acrid (yellow tannin); nut, hard thick shell with small edible kernel

Bark: thick, deeply furrowed, gray-brown

Wood: hard, heavy, chocolate brown heartwood, chambered pith

Range: Southwest and northern Mexico, stream bottoms 1067-2135 m elevation

Importance: edible nuts (nogales), logs for cabinet-work, burls and stumps have especially desirable grain, fence posts, allelopathy
