Distinguishing Characteristics:

Leaves: scalelike or needlelike (dimorphic); scale-like leaves blue-green, glandular with white visible resin drops; stout branchlets

Flowers: dioecious

Cone: bluish or brownish berry less than 13 mm diameter; hard mealy, 3-4 seeded; matures second year

Bark: in deeply furrowed checkered plates; red bloom

Range: Southwest (Texas to Mexico)

Importance: fuelwood, posts, game food; prolific sprouter
