Distinguishing Characteristics:

Leaves: alternate, simple, deciduous; typically ovate but often 3-5 lobed, coarsely serrate; somewhat scabrous

Flowers: dioecious

Fruit: multiple of drupelets, purplish berry 13 mm long, oblong, juicy

Bark: smooth, light gray, becoming finely furrowed

Range: central Texas west through Arizona

Importance: fence posts, edible fruit
