Distinguishing Characteristics:

Leaves: alternate, simple, deciduous; 3-5 lobed less than 25 cm long

Flowers: male & female in clusters of 2-5 balls each

Fruit: brownish ball (multiple of achenes) 2.5 cm diameter, in clusters of 2-4 per stalk; gradually break up on the tree from fall to winter

Bark: smooth, mottled in white, green and brown

Range: Southwest, canyons and near streams

Importance: an important component of riparian habitat, ornamental
