Distinguishing Characteristics:

Leaves: alternate, simple, persistent; oblong or obovate, less than 7.6 cm long; rounded apex, margin wavy with few teeth near apex, thick leathery, dull blue-green above; densely pubescent below; persistent 12-15 ± months

Flowers: male in catkins, female small stigmatic lobes

Fruit: acorn 19-25 mm long, cup shallow; meat sweetish

Bark: thick plates and pronounced fissures, light gray to whitish

Range: Southwest, northern Mexico; common in oak woodlands; 1524-2316 m elevation

Importance: probably largest oak in Southwest; mast for deer, turkey, hogs, squirrel, band-tailed pigeon, etc...

3. Whitish platy bark
