Distinguishing Characteristics:

Leaves: alternate, simple, deciduous; 2.5-7.6 cm long, leathery, margin singly serrate

Flowers: spring, before leaves

Fruit: simple, rounded samara, less than 13 mm long; in dense clusters, light green, glabrous

Bark: gray furrowed

Range: Asia; widely planted in U.S.

Importance: widely planted shade tree, especially in Midwest, Plains States, and West; very drought-hardy; fast-growing but short-lived

1. Dark brown pubescent, blunt buds

2. Relatively small singly serrate leaves
